A Minutes Silence for George Floyd
The first PGA Tour Golf Championship after a 3 month Covid hiatus decided that the 8:46 a.m. tee time ‘will feature no players’. Instead, it will be a minute’s silence in memory of African American George Floyd who lay dying as a white policeman pinned him to the ground with his knee on his neck for 8 minutes 46 seconds in broad daylight on a public street in Minneapolis, USA, two weeks ago.
8:46 Global Symbol
8:46 has become a global symbol for the racial injustice faced by the black community. All communities and all colours of people around the world have united in protest of racism in the USA and anywhere else. It is hoped that the 8:46 minute’s silence at Colonial Country Club (Charles Schwab Challenge) will amplify the discussions and the protests against social injustice.
So the PGA Tour’s 8:46 minute’s silence for George Floyd demonstrates how every event and everyone can stimulate the conversation about racial issues.
