LIFE BEGINS AT 60 –   WOMAN ROWS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN SOLO

Sixty year old Belfast woman, Shirley Thompson, is preparing to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Shirley will become the oldest women to row the ocean solo (and the first Irish woman). Yet she  has never swam nor rowed before she took on this project. “I hate getting my hair wet.” says Shirley who is embarking on  90 – 100 days to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean.

“The fear is almost part of the pleasure.”

“I’m looking forward to the good bits and also the not so good bits.” Shirley has never rowed nor swam.  Once upon a time she smoked 60 cigarettes a day. She beat that habit and has since completed the Antarctica Marathon, Verdon Trail, Yukon and of course Jungle Marathon (which she organises herself).

“Age is just a number.”

I can demonstrate that age is just a number, and a 60 year old woman is not past her sell by date – which is often how we are viewed by society. .

“Being at one with nature”

I love the idea of being at one with nature, so far from land and humanity, the isolation, the struggle and the privilege to experience something few people with ever do.

We wish Shirley Thompson good luck with this savage challenge and will watch out for any updates – please tell us if you hear any news.
